Gumroad wins before demand is proven. Thinkific Basic wins surprisingly early.
Gumroad has no monthly subscription but takes 10% plus $0.50 from a direct sale before processing. Thinkific Basic costs $39.58 per month on annual billing. At a $100 price, Basic becomes cheaper from the fourth monthly direct sale when Thinkific Payments is available.
This is the annual-budget comparison, not an invoice of $39.58. Regular monthly Basic is $54 and crosses at six sales; the full $475 annual commitment crosses at 46 sales across the year. See the whole-year assumptions and four-sale launch example.
The cost and crossover tables assume no refunds. Standard Gumroad refunds return its fee on the refunded portion; Stripe Connect refunds retain Gumroad and processing fees. Official PayPal Connect articles conflict on whether Gumroad returns its own fee. Treat the both-fees-retained PayPal example as a conservative assumption, not a confirmed account outcome. On an annual budget, Thinkific Basic crosses Gumroad at four monthly $100 sales
A $100 Gumroad direct sale creates a $10.50 Gumroad fee before processing. Four sales cost $42, which is already above Thinkific Basic's $39.58 monthly budget under the native-payment assumption.

This low-volume example isolates subscriptions and published platform charges. It is far below Gumroad's $20,000 monthly high-volume threshold. A Thinkific third-party gateway fee, if applicable to the account, can move the break-even.

Gumroad may fit when
- You are validating the first paid offer.
- A monthly bill is riskier than a percentage fee.
- Simple product delivery is enough.
- Merchant-of-record tax handling matters.
Thinkific may fit when
- Courses need quizzes, discussions, community, and structure.
- You expect at least a few regular monthly sales.
- You want a branded learning site and growing catalog.
- The payment route offered to your account works end to end.
Learning-feature limits
A quiz, approved homework and a certificate are not the same feature
Basic's published course tools include quizzes and discussions. Native quizzes are multiple choice, with no current retake limit. Our interpretation: a repeatable quiz alone does not establish practical competence or a controlled-attempt assessment.
The current pricing page and assignment article list Start and higher for the homework-approval workflow. A broad engagement overview says assignments are on all plans; do not treat that conflicting overview as a promise of Basic access. Confirm the offered plan and builder. In the newer builder, assignment auto-approval is unavailable; the classic builder can auto-approve, but then cannot reject submissions. An automatic approval is not evidence of reviewed work.
Start's advertised completion certificate is also a separate feature, not proof of accreditation or improved student outcomes. Use the learner-access check before replacing Gumroad's included delivery.

Check the money path before trusting the break-even
Thinkific can use TCommerce powered by Thinkific Payments, Stripe, or PayPal, but the routes do not have identical availability or support for recurring products. Gumroad controls checkout as merchant of record and varies payout methods by country. Confirm eligibility, settlement currency, withdrawal, and a real test payout before migrating.
