Decision-first verdict

Podia is the simplest multi-product storefront; Kajabi is the deepest integrated business; Thinkific is the strongest learning-product catalog.

Choose Podia when courses, downloads, coaching, community, email, and a website need to coexist with low setup friction. Choose Kajabi when the product ladder depends on email, funnels, automation, offers, community, and cross-selling. Choose Thinkific for a catalog centered on learning products, Teachable for a straightforward education storefront, or Gumroad for low-commitment validation before structured learning matters.

Start with the operating model

The best platform is the one that removes your real bottleneck

A creator product ladder may start with a free checklist, sell a template, move buyers into a course, offer coaching, and retain customers in a membership. The platform must preserve customer access, pricing, bundles, taxes, files, learner progress, and email permissions across that journey. A cheap download checkout can become expensive when the course needs structure and retention tools.

This guide compares the practical workflow, not the length of each vendor's feature list. Prices are annual-plan monthly equivalents where a price is shown. Payment processing, taxes, optional services, and regional gateway rules remain separate.

Selection criteria

Score these requirements before opening a free trial

Product model

Confirm separate products for courses, downloads, coaching, events, community, memberships, bundles, subscriptions, lead magnets, order bumps, and upsells.

Buyer delivery

Separate account checkout, free email delivery and waitlists. Test file retrieval, device opening, course progress and revision scope; one product label does not establish every access route.

Commerce stack

Compare checkout, coupons, bundles, payment plans, subscriptions, tax handling, affiliates, cart recovery, upsells, currencies, gateways, refunds, and payouts.

Audience ownership

Inspect email capture, consent, segmentation, broadcasts, automations, exports, custom domain, analytics, tracking, and what remains portable after migration.

What each option does well

Match strengths to the work you will do every week

Podia

Podia includes courses, downloads, coaching, events, community, website, blog, landing pages, custom-domain support, and email allowances on paid plans.

Watch: The simple interface comes with less LMS and marketing depth than specialist platforms; model Mover's 5% fee and plan product, video, space, email, and assistant limits.

Kajabi

Kajabi supports courses, communities, coaching, podcasts, newsletters, downloads, offers, landing pages, email campaigns, funnels, and automations in one system.

Watch: Price and plan limits are substantial, and affected third-party payment providers can trigger an extra Kajabi fee; it is overbuilt for a small download catalog.

Thinkific

Basic combines courses and community with limited downloads and coaching/webinar products. Start adds unlimited downloads and coaching/webinar products, bundles, paid memberships and native live course lessons.

Watch: Map each planned product and checkout feature to its actual tier; a unified product model does not put every feature on Basic. Processing and conditional third-party gateway costs remain separate.

Teachable

Teachable supports courses, coaching, digital downloads, memberships, community, bundles, payments, and education-focused learner access.

Watch: Model Starter's fee and check product, membership-tier, affiliate, marketing, and usage limits before migrating a large catalog.

Gumroad

Gumroad removes subscription risk and makes a small file-based catalog fast to validate with direct checkout and delivery.

Watch: The percentage fee compounds with sales, Discover costs more, and structured courses, assessments, communities, memberships, and learning analytics are not its core advantage.

Trial protocol

Run the same seven tests in every candidate

  1. Create a free lead magnet, paid download, course, bundle, payment plan, subscription, and premium service.
  2. Buy the full ladder as one test customer and inspect the library, receipts, access, emails, progress, and cancellations.
  3. Test file size, version updates, download limits, video playback, captions, mobile access, and expired access.
  4. Run a coupon, order bump, upsell, refund, failed payment, tax scenario, affiliate attribution, and currency conversion.
  5. Segment buyers by product and behavior, then export contacts, consent, orders, enrollments, and product files.
  6. Map every custom domain, landing page, blog, email, analytics, automation, and support integration still required.
  7. Calculate the monthly stack and effective fee rate at low, expected, and high sales volumes.

Use a test learner and a low-value test purchase where possible. A polished administrator demo does not prove the learner, checkout, refund, or payout experience.

Product type and delivered file

A downloadable file is not a streamed lesson or a shared course asset

Choose the delivery route before counting products or comparing subscription fees. A platform can support a file without displaying it in the browser, giving every buyer an account or updating every copy of that file.

Documented routeWhat it doesWhat to check separately
Podia digital downloadFiles up to 5GB each are delivered for use on the customer's device, not streamed in the download product. Customers can retrieve files individually or together as a ZIP.Check the reader or application, storage and unpacking on the intended device; an upload allowance is not a compatibility result.
Podia free deliveryFree checkout requires an account. Free email delivery does not; a waitlist collects interest without granting file access.Specify which path the reader receives. Do not count a waitlist signup as a successful delivery or mistake email delivery for an account library.
Thinkific course downloadsThe New Course Builder allows 10 files per lesson; Classic allows 100. The download-lesson guide lists a 2GB per-file limit and excludes HTML, SVG and DMG.These are course-lesson rules, not a standalone digital-product allowance. Asset-library limits differ by media type; do not apply 2GB to every upload path.
Thinkific shared course assetReplacing an asset updates its uses across courses and requires the same asset type. The library is not supported in standalone digital downloads or coaching/webinar products.List every affected course before replacing it. Do not promise that one course-library edit updates unrelated products or copies already saved on a device.

Keep a small delivery and revision record

  1. File and route: record the format, version, size, product type and intended application. Name whether access is through checkout, email or a course lesson.
  2. Observed result: in an already-permitted preview, use your own non-sensitive practice file to check retrieval, opening and any ZIP unpacking on the intended device. Leave untested devices and software unknown; do not upload customer or paid-package files to try this guide.
  3. Revision scope: list the lessons or products that reference the file, keep an original backup and distinguish a changed online asset from an older saved copy. A successful download is not course completion or proof of learning.
Can a Podia download video be streamed like a course lesson?

Not in the documented digital-download product. The customer downloads the file to use it on their device. Choose and verify a course delivery route if streaming is required; do not assume that the same uploaded file has the same behavior in every product type.

Will replacing a Thinkific asset update every product?

The documented shared update applies to courses using that asset. The asset library excludes standalone digital downloads and coaching/webinar products. Check those products separately, and do not describe an online replacement as changing a customer's previously saved copy.

For a small informal resource, an existing file-sharing link and a blank version record may be enough. Check permissions and licensing either way. This is documentation-based selection guidance, not a completed upload, app-compatibility test or guarantee of file protection. Reading it requires no account, email, upload or purchase; the original free CourseProfit samples and private paid files are unchanged.

Compare the platform fit after checking delivery; the fee-only result cannot choose the required file workflow.

Frequently asked

Questions to settle before subscribing

What is the best platform to sell courses and digital products?

Podia is a strong simple default, Kajabi is the deepest integrated marketing system, and Thinkific is strong when learning products remain central. Teachable suits an education storefront expanding its catalog, while Gumroad is useful for low-commitment validation.

Can I sell ebooks, templates, and courses from one website?

Yes. The shortlisted platforms support at least some combination of downloads and courses, but bundles, buyer libraries, memberships, email, tax, and limits differ. Build your exact product ladder in a trial.

Is Gumroad cheaper than a course platform?

At very low sales it can be because there is no monthly subscription. Its direct-sale fee is 10% + $0.50 before payment processing, so a dedicated platform can become cheaper as volume grows. CourseProfit Lab's existing Gumroad comparisons model those break-even points.

Should I use separate platforms for downloads and courses?

Only when the specialist benefits exceed the extra customer accounts, integrations, support, analytics fragmentation, fees, and migration risk. A combined platform can simplify operations, but may be weaker at one product type.
