A downloadable certificate is not automatically proof of competence, accreditation, continuing education, or regulatory compliance. First decide whether you need proof of attendance, 100% completion, a passing score, reviewed work, identity verification, an expiration date, or an auditable credential. Then test whether the platform records the evidence behind the document.

Run the same seven tests in every candidate
- Write the exact award rule in one sentence: completion, attendance, passing score, reviewed work, or another measurable condition.
- Build every required question and assignment type, including manual grading, feedback, retakes, and accommodations.
- Fail a learner, pass a learner, expire a certificate, correct a name, revoke an award, and issue a replacement.
- Export the scores, attempts, completion evidence, reviewer history, and certificate record an auditor or client would request.
- Check the certificate PDF, public share link, verification method, serial number, expiration, branding, and mobile accessibility.
- Ask legal, accrediting, employer, or continuing-education stakeholders to approve the evidence model before launch.
- Price external exam, proctoring, identity, credential, SCORM, and reporting tools that the platform does not provide natively.

What must happen before the certificate is awarded?
LearnWorlds distinguishes the rule configured for a Completion award from the assessment inside a Certificate of Knowledge. Choose the evidence you need before designing the PDF.

What happens when LearnWorlds course access expires?
- Course access: expiry prevents opening the course; learning records remain stored. A due date can mark work overdue without removing access.
- Award validity: certificate expiry makes the award invalid, with its historical record retained. This is a separate setting from course access.
- Download access: Configured My Certificates pages and enabled award notifications provide download routes. Their existence does not establish access after unenrollment or course expiry.
LearnWorlds documents irreversible revocation with history retained; deletion removes the record and its download. A progress reset can keep or delete the issued certificate. Later downloads reflect edits to the award record; changing a profile name does not update it. None of these actions erases a previously saved PDF.
Administrative completion can assign 100% to unfinished assessments without a learner attempt. Label manual actions in your evidence record. The reviewed documents do not establish download access after unenrollment or course expiry. Starting retraining does not extend an existing certificate: a new award requires the new certification requirements to be completed.
Before promising access, write down course-access expiry, certificate expiry and learner download status separately. Ask the school to confirm the post-access download route; an administrator's retained record is not proof that the learner can retrieve it. Keep already saved PDFs separate from the current award's validity.

Award lifecycle, not just PDF design
Completion, access removal and certificate revocation are separate states
Record the award rule, course-access state and credential state separately. The official examples below show why deleting a design or removing course access is not a universal way to withdraw an earned award.

Thinkific's newer designer applies to sites created on or after July 8, 2026, on Start or higher. Its legacy documentation also warns that adding a certificate after a learner already completed the course does not automatically issue an award. Teachable's native certificates require Growth or higher. Revocation does not remove a PDF the learner already downloaded, as Teachable explicitly warns.
A small evidence record before choosing a plan
- Before award: record the required work, a permitted test learner's actual result and whether the award is withheld when that rule is unmet.
- After award: record the certificate ID, issue date, course access and in-site download status as separate fields.
- After a correction or withdrawal: record the action, administrator, time, portal status and replacement ID. Retain an audit record; do not promise to erase previously saved copies.
This is a documentation-based comparison, not an account trial or accreditation check. Use previews or isolated test learners; do not alter real students, awards or payments for this checklist. A manually designed PDF can be enough for an informal acknowledgement, but it still needs an honest award rule and a record. Automation is worth paying for only when it supplies a required workflow.

Is a course completion certificate accredited?
Not automatically. A platform-generated certificate usually confirms the rule configured by the course owner. Accreditation, professional credit, regulatory acceptance, and employer recognition come from the issuing organization and governing framework, not the software alone.
What is the difference between a completion and knowledge certificate?
In LearnWorlds, Completion uses a selected rule: no additional requirement, exams, activities, course percentage or minimum time. It has no exam of its own. Knowledge requires its own assessment's passing percentage plus any added requirement; text and file work awaits grading. Does removing course access revoke an earned certificate?
Not universally. Thinkific's newer designer keeps earned certificates downloadable after course access expires. Teachable documents loss of in-site viewing/download after unenrollment or revocation, but previously downloaded PDFs remain. LearnWorlds separates course-access expiry from certificate validity; its reviewed documents do not settle learner downloads after access ends. Record access, award status and downloads separately; none proves accreditation or lets you erase a saved copy.
Can I use Kajabi or Teachable for certification?
Both can issue course certificates, but Teachable's native certificate feature requires Growth or higher. A completion award alone does not establish accreditation or competence. Verify the eligible plan, assessment evidence, reporting, identity checks and audit trail against the specific claim.
